Jeffrey Hunter, the man who was almost Mike Brady

The Alfred Hitchcock Hour 1962

Sherwood Schwartz spoke at length about Jeffrey Hunter being cast as Mike Brady in his book, "Brady, Brady, Brady". Hunter would have been 42 at the time, and Reed was 6 years younger, which makes me wonder if that was a factor in the casting.

The urban myth of Gene Hackman as Mike Brady is always entertaining. The Brady Bunch pilot was filmed in early October 1968. Here is Hackman in April 1968 when he was nominated for a best supporting actor Oscar.
It's not possible to imagine a few months after his Oscar nomination, he would be auditioning for a family sitcom TV pilot as part of an ensemble cast with 6 children, and a 5 year contract. In fact, Hackman had roles in four feature films that all opened in theatres in 1969.
