Update: The Waltons Exterior House Set was Sort Of used on Mayberry RFD!

This house set on the RKO Lot in Culver City was rebuilt on The Warner Bros, lot when Mayberry RFD moved to The Burbank Studios for their third season in 1970. It was cancelled a year later, and it looks like the Waltons moved in shortly after.

  1. Hmmm..
I will have to dispute you on this one.
It may have been a very similar style of house, but I believe the Mayberry RFD house was on the Desilu backlot, while the Waltons was at Warners, located in a fairly small patch of woods.
Because behind the Mayberry house you can see the very visible berms and telephone poles that were seen in many Desilu backlot shows.Unless Warners went to alot of trouble reconstructing the whole area behind the Waltons house.
    Just my input.
And those Waltons could sure have used a can of WD40 for that screen door!

    1. ow, ok, very interesting, thanks! There is a lot written about it. You are right. I struck me odd that so much of Mayberry RFD was on the RKO lot, but they would use this in Burbank. It is so identical, in this Facebook post, Kami Cotler compares the two as being the same:

This is a great page on the subject.

They did build a replica on Warner Bros. but this looks so exact. I gotta check all this out, and update, thanks!

    2. OK, well, apparently Mayberry RFD moved to Burbank for Season 03, but this house is Season 01, so it is not the same. Maybe they rebuilt it for them in Burbank, then Waltons moved in.

  2. Great stuff!
    Thanks for the links.
I first became fascinated with sets and filming locations when ,in 1973,my parents took me to the small house and lagoon where they filmed "Flipper"
It was actually located in the Miami Sequarium park, and they had,and still have, the Flipper show there.
