Monty Margetts was the original choice to play Alice. When Joyce Bulifant was replaced by Florence Henderson to play Carol- literally three days before the shooting of the pilot - they replaced Monty Margetts with Ann B Davis as well. This was because the producers felt they needed a comic character to play the housekeeper to balance out the serious mother. Margetts was not considered a comedian.
Monty Margetts also made a funny appearance on the Season 4 Halloween episode, "A Safe & Sane Halloween". She's a kind neighborhood woman twice tormented by the 3 creatures that Tabitha wished out of a book of hers. First they give her a beard, and then another time they clobber her with a chocolate cream pie. She was hit off-camera, but she came back covered in pie.
