I believe this giraffe toy came in more than one size when whatever toy company made it was producing them. Even the ones shown here all seem to vary in scale, the My Favorite Martian scenes appear to have the toy on a pedestal of some kind which makes it look taller, so bear that in mind that that one is not nearly as huge as it seems to be.
I've found a picture for sale on eBay a while back with a 60's era father and daughter posing with the same giraffe toy, but in the picture the giraffe looks as if it would be the same height as the man if he were standing. In the Bewitched scenes the giraffe looks like it barely comes past Aunt Clara's waist. But yet in the Brady Bunch scenes, if the neck was standing straight up and not bent down, it's head would be right around Alice's shoulders.
In the HGTV Very Brady Renovation series when they tracked down the giraffe and are opening it's box one of the crew says "You found Daisy!" It's been said in both Maureen and Barry's books that Maureen owned the giraffe prior to the show, the crew asked the kids to bring in special things from home to decorate the set to make it look like it might be their real life room, Maureen brought in the giraffe toy.
They never said in the HGTV series if the original Giraffe's name was Daisy or if someone nicknamed it that on set, but now that I see the crisp clear scans from Bewitched of what is clearly a brand new toy purchased to use as a prop, and you see the sprig of daisies in it's mouth, it would make sense if Maureen named it that as a kid when she got it new.
You can see an updated, but still retro, version of this giraffe, possibly from the same toy company, in an episode of Three's Company. Chrissy wins at the track and agrees to share her winnings with the roommates but then makes an impulse buy of nearly the whole wad on a stuffed giraffe that Jack and Janet hate. It's constructed a little different, and the fake fur pattern is more realistic, but has the same sprig of daisies in it's mouth.
Tabitha had the giraffe in her bedroom in many of the early color episodes.
ReplyDeleteOh, cool,ok thanks I will keep an eye out
DeleteIt is huge. Doesn't strike me as an easy thing for a child to play with.
ReplyDeleteA similar giraffe can be seen in WandaVision, at the beginning of the 70's episode.
