Martin and Tim lived in the apartment over Mrs. Brown's garage.
These "exteriors" are clearly filmed inside a soundstage! You can some differences in the set (by their front door) in the color photos when the show changed studios for its third season.

Although they did an amazing job at creating those old sit com "exterior" sets, you could still tell that they were on a sound stage. They are just too perfect and tidy.
ReplyDeletePlus, whenever a reflective surface was on set,you could easily see the studio lights.I believe they would spray dull coat on anything that might reflect the lights.
Deleteinteresting! I never noticed that.
DeleteYes, they’d apply some sort of spray to anything too shiny. I know firsthand about that: I was in a few TV shows where I held/played a trombone. It caused too much glare and reflection, so some guy asked if he could spray stuff on it to reduce the glare. It worked for him, but I owned that trombone! It stayed dull-looking for the rest of its life with me. Could not get the stuff off without damaging the finish beneath it.
DeleteBe careful if a stagehand asks to do stuff like this, especially if they want to do it to your own personal property.
