Mike Lookinland with Frank and Sadie Delfino, The Brady Kids Stand-ins

Photo from Sherwood and Lloyd Schwartz' "Brady, Brady, Brady"

In general, stand-ins are used on every set to literally stand in front of the camera while the crew sets the lights and the camera shots. They need the actors in place to frame and light them for the camera. By substituting stand-ins who are similar build and height, the actors are free to do other things, take a break, or in The Brady Kids case, they could be in school while the lights and camera were set. Rather than hire children for this, Frank and Sadie were adults, and the right size, so they could work longer hours, and did not need guardians and teachers.

At some point the kids outgrew them and, I suppose, they would stand on apple boxes, a common film set item to stand on, or maybe they both just worked on the show less.

Unusual POV of The Brady Residence

.
The 1970 Mannix episode “One For The Lady” was filmed on The Brady Bunch set and used this interesting angle from the front door looking towards the fourth wall.

The Bradys maybe never (?) shot through this angle of their dining room patio doors. On very rare occasions they would do the reverse, filming through these doors looking out to the driveway and yard. I’m guessing it was more difficult to light or set up or perhaps after a while it was just habit that they never structured anything that way.

Here are a couple more shots from the episode. It’s cool seeing the set with the staircase removed.

The Brady Bunch Trellis

Marcia made The Brady's trellis famous, but it didn't otherwise get a lot of notice. It was pretty mod and cool, but it was on the lesser seen side of the back yard.

In this very early episode, below with Cindy, there was no trellis. At some point in the first season it appeared, here with Carol in the very late first season episode "Grass Is Always Greener".

The Kelly Kids visit provided a great view of the yard.
But in this shot, the trellis was put up, but no one bothered to put any greens on it.  Because of this, you can imagine that its primary purpose was always just to fill the plain, big blank wall along the side of the house.

In March 1975, after the Brady's cancellation, this episode, of Happy Days, "Fonzie Joins the Band", was filmed on the backyard set.
