Brady Bunch" star Florence Henderson couldn't know that she would become a heroine while filming the three part opener, "The Hawaiian Adventure" in Oahu (the series begins September 22, over ABC).
During outrigger scenes off the coast of Waikiki, an unusually large wave caught the family's craft as well as the camera boat, causing the camera-carrying outrigger to crash into the side of the other which had broached in the heavy surf. Young Susan Olsen, a non-swimmer, flew into the water. As Florence recalls it, "My ankles were locked under the seat and I was hanging in the water keeping Susan's head up. It all happened so fast After I pulled Susie back in, we headed out again and completed filming. But every time the camera boat angled toward us for close-ups, little Susie shivered like a parkaless Eskimo."
Florence and the "Brady" brood spent more than a week on location around Oahu, from the Arizona Memorial in Pearl Harbor to Hanama Bay, a state park for protection of fish to Sea Life Park, a unique facility featuring trained sea mammals and exotic birds of the tropics.
